Our commitment to patients extends throughout all we do. Through our patient services MS ActiveSource programs last year, we proudly contributed $284 million toward helping patients obtain free or discounted medications. Employee volunteerism is another way we extend our commitment. In 2011, we held our first “Care Deeply Volunteer Day,” which paired more than 1,000 employees around the globe with charitable projects in local communities. We support tomorrow's scientists through educational programs, such as our Community Lab that provides interactive classroom experiences to local secondary school students. And, we are committed to minimizing our impact on the environment. We aim to select and implement sustainability projects that integrate both environmental and economic value. As one example, we are currently evaluating a disposable hybrid manufacturing operation as a way to reduce our water and energy use, as well as to achieve cost efficiencies. For additional information on our programs, please see our Corporate Citizenship Report.
Biogen Idec is committed to being a responsible corporate citizen and conducting business in a manner that is consistent with our mission and vision. Our commitment to corporate citizenship extends to patient education and support programs, giving back to the communities in which we operate, promoting and advancing science education and operating in a sustainable manner.
