George A. Scangos, Ph.D.
George A. Scangos, Ph.D. was appointed Chief Executive Officer and a member of the Board of Directors in June 2010. He joins Biogen Idec from Exelixis, Inc., where he has served as President and CEO and a director since October 1996. From September 1993 to October 1996, Dr. Scangos served as President of Bayer Biotechnology, where he was responsible for research, business development, process development, manufacturing, engineering and quality assurance of Bayer’s biological products. Before joining Bayer in 1987, Dr. Scangos was a Professor of Biology at Johns Hopkins University for six years. Dr. Scangos has served as non-executive Chairman of Anadys Pharmaceuticals, Inc. since 2005 and has been a director of the company since 2003. Dr. Scangos also serves as the Chair of the California Healthcare Institute (CHI), a member of the Board of the Global Alliance for TB Drug Development, and as a director of Foundation Sante and BayBio. He is also a member of the Board of Visitors of the University of California, San Francisco School of Pharmacy, and the National Board of Visitors of the University of California, Davis School of Medicine. He is currently an Adjunct Professor of Biology at Johns Hopkins. Dr. Scangos was a Jane Coffin Childs Post-Doctoral Fellow at Yale University. Dr. Scangos holds a B.A. in Biology from Cornell University and a Ph.D. in Microbiology from the University of Massachusetts.
Susan H. Alexander
Susan H. Alexander is our Executive Vice President, General Counsel and Corporate Secretary and has served in these positions since January 2006. Prior to that, Ms. Alexander had served as the Senior Vice President, General Counsel and Corporate Secretary of PAREXEL International Corp. since September 2003. From June 2001 to September 2003, Ms. Alexander served as General Counsel of IONA Technologies. From January 1995 to May 2001, Ms. Alexander served as Counsel at Cabot Corp. Prior to that, Ms. Alexander was a partner of the law firms of Hinckley, Allen & Snyder and Fine & Ambrogne.
Paul J. Clancy
Paul J. Clancy is our Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer and has served in these positions since August 2007. Mr. Clancy has also served as Senior Vice President of Finance and Vice President of Business Planning at Biogen Idec. Prior to the merger, Mr. Clancy had served as Vice President of Portfolio Management at Biogen Inc. since 2003. He joined the company in 2001 as Vice President, US Marketing. Before joining Biogen, Mr. Clancy spent 13 years at PepsiCo, serving in a range of financial and general management positions including most recently Vice President and General Manager of their Great West Business Unit.
John G. Cox
John G. Cox is our Executive Vice President of Pharmaceutical Operations & Technology and has served in this position since June 2010. Mr. Cox has also served as Senior Vice President of Technical Operations, Senior Vice President of Global Manufacturing, Vice President of Manufacturing & General Manager of Biogen Idec’s operations in Research Triangle Park, North Carolina, and Director of Manufacturing. Mr. Cox joined the company in 2003 as Director of Manufacturing Sciences. Before joining Biogen Idec from 2000 to 2003, Mr. Cox held a number of senior operational roles at Diosynth where he worked in technology transfer, validation and purification. Prior to that, Mr. Cox focused on the same areas at Wyeth Corporation from 1993 to 2000.
Francesco Granata, M.D.
Francesco Granata, M.D. is our Executive Vice President of Global Commercial Operations. Dr. Granata joined Biogen Idec in January 2010. Prior to joining Biogen Idec, Dr. Granata was Group Vice President and President of EUCAN Region in the Global Pharmaceutical Business at Schering-Plough Corporation starting in 2005. Previous to this, Dr. Granata worked in commercial leadership positions at Pfizer, Inc. from 2003 to 2005 and Pharmacia Corporation from 1999 to 2003.
Robert A. Hamm
Robert A. Hamm is our Chief Operating Officer and has served in that position since March 2009. Prior to that, Mr. Hamm had served as our Executive Vice President, Pharmaceutical Operations & Technology since October 2007. He served as Senior Vice President, Neurology Strategic Business Unit beginning from 2004 to 2007. Since joining the company in 1994, he has served in a variety of positions of increasing responsibility, including Senior Vice President, Europe, Africa, Canada and Middle East; Vice President, Sales and Marketing; Vice President, Manufacturing & Engineering; and Director, Northern Europe and Distributors Markets. From 1987 to 1994, he held a variety of management positions at Syntex Laboratories Corp. He is a member of the board of directors for Progenitor Cell Therapy, LLC.
Michael Lytton
Michael Lytton is our Executive Vice President, Corporate and Business Development, and has served in that position since February 2009. From 2001 to 2009, he was a General Partner at Oxford Bioscience Partners, a venture capital firm. From 1993 to 2000, he was Partner, Chairman of the Technology Group and a member of the Executive Committee of the law firm Edwards, Angell, Palmer & Dodge LLP. From 1984 to 1993, Mr. Lytton was a Junior Partner and Co-Chairman of the Biotechnology Practice of the law firm Wilmer Hale.
Michael F. MacLean
Michael F. MacLean is our Senior Vice President, Chief Accounting Officer and Controller and has served in that position since December 2006. Mr. MacLean joined Biogen Idec in October 2006 as Senior Vice President. Prior to that, Mr. MacLean was a managing director of Huron Consulting, where he provided support regarding financial reporting to management and boards of directors of Fortune 500 companies. From June 2002 to October 2005, Mr. MacLean was a partner at KPMG, and from September 1999 to May 2002, he was a partner of Arthur Andersen LLP.
Craig Eric Schneier, Ph.D.
Craig Eric Schneier, Ph.D. is our Executive Vice President, Human Resources, Public Affairs & Corporate Communications and has served in that position since the merger in November 2003. Dr. Schneier was previously Executive Vice President, Human Resources of Biogen Inc., a position he held since January 2003. He joined Biogen in 2001 as Senior Vice President, Strategic Organization Design and Effectiveness, after having served as an external consultant to the company for eight years. Prior to that, Dr. Schneier was president of his own management consulting firm in Princeton, NJ, where he provided consulting services to more than 70 of the Fortune 100 companies, as well as several of the largest European and Asian firms. Dr. Schneier held a tenured professorship at the University of Maryland's Smith School of Business and has held teaching positions at the business schools of the University of Michigan and Columbia University as well as at the Tuck School of Business, Dartmouth College.
