Sustainability

Biogen Idec is committed to sustainability across our organization. Operating in a sustainable manner is both good for our business and a central tenet of our dedication to sound corporate citizenship.

The company has established a Corporate Sustainability Council to ensure we remain committed to reducing our impacts on the environment over the long term. Comprised of senior leaders within the organization, the Council has set a five-year sustainability strategy and approved key initiatives to support these goals.

Many of these initiatives are already underway including the formalization of our green chemistry program, improving the efficiency of our fleet, developing supply chain sustainability performance criteria and the establishment of environmental targets. Our new facility being built in Weston, MA will follow the latest standards of green technology, architecture and industrial design.

Additionally, over the past few years, we have launched several sustainable programs across the company such as the construction of a cogeneration plant, the use of compostable materials in our cafeterias, water conservation projects and a focus on limiting the amount of solid waste we send to landfills.

We are planning to release more information about our sustainability initiatives in 2010 with the publication of our first Corporate Sustainability Report.
