Our capabilities for protein manufacturing are world class in quality and scale. Biogen Idec has expertise in protein expression in mammalian cells and in manufacturing across a range of biologics from monoclonal antibodies to interferon proteins. We also have process sciences capability for cell culture and downstream processing.
With one of the leading capacities for biologics manufacturing in the biotechnology industry, Biogen Idec operates multiple facilities around the globe. Our large-scale manufacturing (LSM) facilities in Research Triangle Park (RTP), North Carolina, and Hillerød, Denmark, each have 90,000 liters of bioreactor capacity and are among the largest biologic manufacturing facilities of their kind in the world. The company also operates small-scale facilities in RTP and Cambridge, Massachusetts. With 198,000 liters of bioreactor capacity around the world, Biogen Idec can support its own growing pipeline of products, as well as the products of partners.
Our RTP facility has received industry recognition for its exceptional design, innovative modular construction methods, and strong safety record. This facility also features a flexible volume manufacturing (FVM) process for our early-stage clinical products. The use of pre-sterilized bioprocess bags enables the FVM process to use up to 90 percent less water, as well as less energy and cleaning chemicals than stainless steel vessels. Any additional waste created by this process is diverted to a waste-to-energy facility, which supports our status as a zero waste-to-landfill company. Our FVM process helped the company win the 2013 Facility of the Year award, which is sponsored by the International Society for Pharmaceutical Engineering, Pharmaceutical Processing magazine and INTERPHEX, one of the industry’s leading trade events.
